In south-central GA, northeast of Albany; organized 1905 from Dooly, Irwin, Wilcox, and Worth counties. Name Origin: For Capt. Henry Gray Turner (1839-1904), officer in the Confederate Army, U.S. representative from GA (1881-97), and associate justice of the GA supreme court (1903).

Area (sq mi): 289.85 (land 286.03; water 3.83). Pop per sq mi: 33.10.
Pop 2005: 9,474. State rank: 133. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.30%; 1990-2000 9.20%. Pop 2000: 9,504 (White 55.90%; Black or African American 41.00%; Hispanic or Latino 2.60%; Asian 0.30%; Other 2.30%). Foreign born: 2.40%. Median age: 33.30.

In southeastern SD, southwest of Sioux Falls; organized Jan 13, 1871 (prior to statehood) from Lincoln County and part of the now-defunct Jayne County. Name Origin: For John W. Turner (1800-83), member of the Dakota Territory legislature (1865-66; 1872) and a superintendent of public instruction.
