twinaxial

twinaxial

A type of cable similar to coax, but with two inner conductors instead of one. It was used in IBM midrange (AS/400, System/3x) communications environments. See twinax card.

Twinaxial Connector
Twinax connectors were used on IBM System 3x and AS/400 computer systems.

All electrical I/O is through rear panel concentric twinaxial connectors or industry standard BNC connectors.
As the application of Ethernet increasingly becomes the preferred backplane interconnect technology for applications, such as modular servers and telecom networks, and over twinaxial copper cables for both intra- and inter-rack connections, IEEE P802.
The interconnect length can be set from 0 to 20 meters of 24-AWG twinaxial cable.
Surge protection equipment offered includes rack-mount and wall-mount standoff protectors, 24-port patch panels, data communication line protectors for RJ-45 and RJ-11 interfaces, coaxial and twinaxial line surge protectors, and USB protectors.

When used with standard 2 mm latch/eject headers from 3M for multi-gigahertz cable-to-board applications , the SCI connectors save valuable board real estate without sacrificing performance compared to the BNC or SMA connectors frequently used with coaxial, and the specialized twinaxial connectors used with twinaxial cable.
The KX1003 allows system integrators to link systems using commonly available, lightweight, and flexible structured copper cabling rather than using the unwieldy and expensive twinaxial InfiniBand cabling," noted Harvey Scull, KeyEye President and CEO.
