| Jan Tschichold, Designer: The Penguin Years is a seminal and impressive contribution to the history of publishing with its focus on Jan Tschichold and his influence with respect to the typographic revolution that was applied to Penguin's mass production of books for the general populace. Following the Biblical commandments (which could possibly offend the very religious) is a text outlining the basic foundation rules of typographic usage, starting with 'In the Beginning God created type' and juxtaposing examples of different type throughout. Still, his verse's bounce and rhythm; the odd chuckle-worthy pun; such typographic pleasantries as an upcurved, letter-spaced grin; and an insouciant randomness of thought that evokes larking about on a beautiful spring day--all recommend this handsomely designed collection to anyone looking for poems of the season. |
