In northeastern NC, on Albemarle Sound, south of Elizabeth City; organized 1729 (prior to statehood) from Chowan, Bertie, Currituck, and Pasquotank counties. Name Origin: For John Tyrrell (1685-1729), a lord proprietor of NC.
