a river in Vostochnyi Kazakhstan Oblast, Kazakh SSR; a right tributary of the Irtysh River of the Ob’ River basin. The Uba is 278 km long and drains an area of 9,850 sq km. It rises from two sources: the Belaia Uba River and the Chernaia Uba River in the Rudnyi Altai Mountains. There are many rapids in the upper course. In its lower course the river breaks up into branches. The Uba is fed chiefly by snow. The high-water period lasts from April to mid-July. The mean flow rate 8 km from the mouth is 177 cu m per sec. The river freezes in November or early December and opens up in April or early May. It is used for floating timber. The city of Shemonaikha is situated on the Uba.
