Uitenhage

Uitenhage (y`tənhāg', oi`tənhä'gə), town (1991 pop. 182,551), Eastern Cape, S South Africa, on the Zwartkops River. It is an industrial center, with large railroad workshops, wool washeries, textile mills, and motor vehicle assembly plants. The town also serves as the commercial center for the surrounding agricultural region. Uitenhage was founded in 1804 and named after Jacob A. Uitenhage de Mist, commissioner-general of the Dutch-held Cape Colony. There is a technical college in the town.

Originally, they were built for a concentration camp in nearby Uitenhage where Boer families were interned during the Boer War.
The subsidiary includes a tire factory and an engineered rubber products factory in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape Province; a chain of 195 retail stores; and the nation's largest retreading operation with 41 plants.
The State President had appointed a Commission "to investigate forthwith all the factual circumstances" regarding the incident at Uitenhage "where people were killed and injured and to submit an urgent report", the letter said.
