Ullman, Edward

Ullman, Edward (Louis) (1912–76) geographer; born in Chicago, Ill. A Ph.D. graduate from the University of Chicago (1942), he worked for U.S. government agencies in the 1940s, including the Office of Special Services and the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1943–46). Professor of geography at the University of Washington (1951–76), he was a specialist in cities and transportation networks, serving as director for the Center for Urban and Regional Research (1967–69) and publishing The Economic Base of American Cities (1969).
