Ulrich

(duke of Württemberg). Born Feb. 8,1487, in Reichenweier (now Riquewihr), Alsace; died Nov. 6, 1550, in Tubingen. Duke of Württemberg from 1498 (independently from 1503) to 1519 and again from 1534 to 1550.

In 1514, Ulrich suppressed the Uprising of Poor Konrad, a revolt by peasants and townspeople. In 1519, after having aroused the opposition of the local nobility as well as the emperor, he was banished from his dukedom by forces of the Swabian League. During the Peasant War of 1524-26, Ulrich invaded Württemberg and unsuccessfully tried to draw the peasants to his side. Restored as duke in 1534, he helped institute the Reformation in Württemberg.
