Ulsan (
l`sän`), city (1995 pop. 333,178), SE South Korea, an independent metropolitan city and a port on the Korea Strait. Once a fishing port and agricultural center, it is now an industrial center, with oil refineries, chemical plants, and a large sugar refinery. Automobiles, fertilizer, textiles, ships, and aluminum are produced.Ulsan a city and major port in South Korea, in the province of Kyongsang-namdo; situated in the bay Ulsan-man of the Sea of Japan. Population, 157,000 (1970). The city has a petroleum and chemical complex, including facilities for oil-refining and the manufacture of mineral fertilizers. There is fishing.
