ultracapacitorA capacitor that has much greater energy density and power per pound than electrostatic and electrolytic capacitors. Used in myriad electronic circuits as well as hybrid and electric cars, ultracapacitors are also called "supercapacitors."

Ultracapacitors and lithium-ion batteries can be used to power cellular phones and computer equipment. The Chrysler research, with costs shared between the government and Chrysler and its suppliers, will focus on technologies that include direct-injection diesel engines, electric motors, ultracapacitors and high-powered batteries, said Peter Rosenfeld, director of new generation vehicle programs. Diesel, ethanol or gas-powered engines are supplemented with an electrical motor/generator for propulsion and energy recovery, as well as ultracapacitors for energy storage. |
