Masetti, Umberto Avgustovich
Born Feb. 18, 1869, in Bologna; died Apr. 27, 1919, in Moscow. Italian voice teacher. Masetti studied piano and composition at the Bologna Conservatory and took singing lessons. He wrote several operas, symphonies (which were performed under his direction in Bologna and Rome), and art songs. From 1899 he lived in Russia. In that year he became a professor at the Moscow Conservatory. He trained outstanding Russian singers. Among his students were A. V. Nezhdanova, N. A. Obukhova, and V. V. Barsova.
