The genus Umbilicaria (lichenized ascomycetes) in Colombia.
Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the methanol extracts obtained from five lichen species including Parmelia saxatilis, Platismatia glauca, Ramalina polli-naria, Ramalina polymorpha and Umbilicaria nylanderi-ana which have not been studied yet.
The total phenolic content of the methanol extract of Parmelia saxatilis, Platismatia glauca, Ramalina pollinaria, Ramalina polymorpha and Umbilicaria nylanderiana was determined employing the literature methods (Slinkard and Singleton, 1977; Chandler and Dodds, 1983) involving the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and gallic acid as standard.
The antimicrobial activities of Parmelia saxatilis, Platismatia glauca, Ramalina pollinaria, Ramalina polymorpha and Umbilicaria nylanderiana extracts against microorganisms examined in the present study were qualitatively and quantitatively assessed by the presence or absence of inhibition zones and zone diameter, and MIC values.
It was followed by Ramalina polymorpha, Parmelia saxatilis, Umbilicaria nylanderianai, and Platismatia glauca, inhibiting 10, 9, 6, and 4 of the bacteria species tested, respectively.
The maximal inhibition zones and MIC values for bacterial strains, which were sensitive to the extracts of Ramalina pollinaria, Ramalina polymorpha, Parmelia saxatilis, Umbilicaria nylanderianai, and Platismatia glauca were in the range of 7-16, 7-18, 7-16, 6-22 and 8-12 mm, 15.
