Umeå (ü`məō'), city (1990 pop. 60,310), capital of Västerbotten co., NE Sweden, on an inlet of the Gulf of Bothnia and at the mouth of the Umeälv River; founded 1622. Manufactures of this industrial center include forest products, furniture, and machinery. Nearby Holmsund serves as its port. Umeå is the cultural center of Upper Norrland and has a university (1963).

Capital of the län (county) of Västerbotten, Umeå is a seaport through which timber is exported. The city’s industries include machinebuilding, sawmilling, and wood products. The Stornorrfors Hydroelectric Power Plant is located nearby. With a capacity of 375 megawatts, it is the largest in Sweden. Umeå is also the location of a university.
