Umm al-Qaiwain (m äl-kīwīn`), sheikhdom (1995 pop. 35,157), c.300 sq mi (780 sq km), part of the federation of seven United Arab Emirates United Arab Emirates, federation of sheikhdoms (2005 est. pop. 2,563,000), c.30,000 sq mi (77,700 sq km), SE Arabia, on the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

, SE Arabia, on the Persian Gulf. It is the least populous and least developed emirate. Fishing and boatbuilding remain important; dates are grown in a limited area. Oil has not been found there. The sheikhdom, formerly a British protectorate, became part of the United Arab Emirates in 1971.

In the northern emirate of Umm al-Qaiwain, 19 grooms gathered last month for a mass wedding ceremony sponsored by the government and attended by the ruler of the city-state.
Atlantis on March 22, 2006, signed two agreements to develop the Umm al-Qaiwain (UaQ) field and to sell the gas to the Ras al-Khaimah Gas Commission (RaKGC).
After making an unannounced visit to Umm al-Qaiwain in late February, Shaikh Muhammad was appalled to find the local government offices in disarray.
