Sigrid Undset wrote Kristin Lavransdatter a year before she was baptized a Catholic, but she had probably been intellectually converted to the Catholic faith by the time she wrote her masterpiece. Andre Gide was not on Stephen's list, but Sigrid Undset was. Eventually this "Catholic renascence" in America called attention to the Catholic literary revival in Europe, such as the writings of Sigrid Undset and Frangois Mauriac. |
