United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), specialized agency of the United Nations. Headquartered in Vienna, it was organized in 1966 and made a specialized UN agency in 1985. UNIDO's mission is to promote industrial progress in developing nations. It mobilizes knowledge, skills, information, and technology in order to promote employment, aid in creating competitive economies, and foster a healthy environment in those nations it assists. UNIDO works with the cooperation of 169 member states, and has 36 country and regional offices and a variety of other offices. It acts as a global forum and as a technical cooperation agency, both generating and disseminating vital knowledge and designing and implementing specific programs to help in the industrial development of its client states.
