Universal Product Code

Universal Product Code: see bar code bar code, computer coding system that uses a printed pattern of lines or bars to identify products, mail and packages, customer accounts, and the like. Bar codes are read by optically scanning the printed pattern and using a computer program to decode the pattern.

Universal Product Code (UPC)

Standard bar code used to identify grocery and other retail merchandise. In the UPC system, the five digits on the left are assigned to a particular manufacturer or maker and the five digits on the right are used by that manufacturer to identify a specific type or make of product.

Just like the 11-digit Universal Product Code (UPC) that identifies items sold in most countries today, a sliver of DNA could identify every living species on Earth, Hebert and his Guelph colleagues assert.
And the absence of Caxton, Napster, Universal Product Code, James Dewar, China (to mention just a few proper nouns in the text I tried to look up) from the index is scandalous.
It permits unlimited bar codes per item, so items can be identified by part number, universal product code number and so on.
