Universal PicturesU.S. film studio. Formed by Carl Laemmle in 1912, it became a top producer of popular, low-budget serials in the 1920s and of horror movies in the 1930s. Its later films include the Abbott and Costello comedies and the Doris Day-Rock Hudson bedroom farces. The studio was bought by MCA in 1962, and in 1966 it became a division of Universal City Studios (now simply Universal Studios), the largest packager of television series. | GVA Williams of Connecticut announced that Universal Studios has signed a short-term, 7,100 s/f lease at 76 Progress Drive in Stamford. Annual attendance at Universal Studios Hollywood fell 12 percent in 2003, according to Amusement Business, an industry publication, and revenues at Universal's theme parks division tell 41 percent last year over 2002. The offer is good at Orlando's Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and the Wet 'n' Wild water park, and at Universal Studios Hollywood, Calif. |
