Ural RiverRiver, Russia and Kazakhstan. Rising at the southern end of the Ural Mountains, it flows southwest to cross through western Kazakhstan to the Caspian Sea at Atyrau. Before 1950, the Kazakh Steppe was a broad, continuous belt of grassland that stretched from the Ural River to the Altai foothills, covering large parts of Kostanajskaya; after the 1950s, the region was used extensively for agriculture. The Ural River is one of the key spawning rivers for the sturgeon. |
