Usachev, Iakov Grigor’evich
Born Oct. 17 (29), 1873; died Oct. 28, 1941, in Leningrad. Soviet specialist in machining. Usachev received no formal education in machining, acquiring his knowledge through independent study. In 1902 he began working as a master craftsman at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute, where between 1908 and 1915 he conducted research on strains that accumulate during machining and constructed original instruments with thermocouples and other devices to study the process of cutting metals. He was the first to use a microscope (metallographic analysis) to study chip formation. He later worked at a scientific research institute. Usachev was awarded the Order of Lenin.
