Ustiugov, Nikolai Vladimirovich 

Born Dec. 23, 1896 (Jan. 4, 1897), in the settlement of Sineglazovskii, now Novosineglazovskii, Cheliabinsk Oblast; died Sept. 24, 1963, in Vilnius. Soviet historian. Doctor of historical sciences (1957), professor (1959), Honored Scientist of the Bashkir ASSR (1957).

Ustiugov graduated from Moscow University in 1924. From 1935 to 1963 he was a research worker at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His principal works deal with the socioeconomic history of Russia from the 17th to 19th centuries; they describe the development of capitalism in its initial stage and the history of handicrafts and small-scale commodity production. In addition, Ustiugov wrote on the history of the peoples of the Ukraine, the Volga Region, Kazakhstan, the Ural Region, and the north. Ustiugov also made contributions to such auxiliary historical disciplines as metrology, chronology, and sphragistics.
