prolapseProtrusion of an internal organ out of its normal place, usually of the rectum or uterus outside the body when supporting muscles weaken. The membrane lining the rectum can push out through the anus, most often in old people with constipation who strain during defecation. Chronic rectal prolapse requires surgical repair. The uterus may prolapse into the vagina after gravity adds to weakness from childbirth injuries. | A great many cases of uterine prolapse could be prevented if mothers get trained help during delivery, and if their families make sure they do not have to do heavy work too close to the birth or too soon afterwards. Uterine prolapse is rarely seen in the United States, and when it is, it's usually in elderly women, she says. Fifteen percent of these women suffer serious or long-term, often debilitating complications, such as uterine prolapse (sliding of the uterus from its normal position), fistulae (holes in the birth canal that allow leakage from the bladder or rectum into the vagina), pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. |
