Vélez de Guevara, Luis (lēs` vā`lāth thā gāvä`rä), 1579?–1644, Spanish playwright and novelist. He was a follower of Lope de Vega and wrote many popular plays noted for their poetic quality. Among these the most important are La luna de la sierra [the mountain moon] and Reinar después de morir [to reign after death]. His well-received romance of roguery, El diablo cojuelo [the limping devil] (1641), was widely imitated and was adapted by Le Sage as Le Diable boiteux. Despite lifelong poverty, he was a joyous, vigorous man.
