Vakhtangov, Yevgeni (yĭvgā`nyē väkhtän`gôf), 1883–1922, Russian actor, producer, and founder of the Moscow theater that bears his name. A pupil and friend of Stanislavsky, Vakhtangov joined the Moscow Art Theatre, and in 1914, in charge of an affiliated studio, he produced an enormously successful Macbeth. In 1920 his studio became independent, and he began to mount his own productions. Vakhtangov is celebrated for using grotesque realism and fantasy to great effect, as in Turandot, which was presented after his death.
