Valters, Jānis Teodorovich
(Ivan Fedorovich Valter). Born Jan. 22 (Feb. 3), 1869, in Jelgava; died Dec. 20, 1932, in Berlin. Latvian painter. Valters studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1889-97) under A. D. Kivshenko and V. E. Makovskii. He worked in Jelgava (until 1906), Dresden (1906-17), and Berlin (from 1917). His early works consisted of acutely observant urban genre scenes, folk paintings (In the Marketplace [1897], Peasant Girl [c.1905], Orphan [1907]—all in the Art Museum of the Latvian SSR in Riga), and realistic landscapes. Subsequently Valters was influenced by expressionism. REFERENCELapinš, A., and A. Eglīts, Jānis Valters. Riga, 1953.Want to thank TFD for its existence?
