Van Allen radiation belt [va′nal·ən ‚rād·ē′a·shən ‚belt]
(geophysics)
One of the belts of intense ionizing radiation in space about the earth formed by high-energy charged particles which are trapped by the geomagnetic field.

Previous research suggested that radio waves clear out a zone within the region of radiation called the Van Allen belts.
