    0.01 sec.
Van Hise, Charles Richard

Born May 29, 1857, in Fulton, Wisconsin; died Nov. 19, 1918, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. American geologist, member of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington.

In 1879, Van Hise began to work at the University of Wisconsin (he became a professor there in 1886 and its president in 1903). He was a professor at the University of Chicago and worked in the US Geological Service (1883-1918). His principal works are related to the study of the Precambrian strata of the southern part of the Canadian Shield (especially in the Lake Superior region). Van Hise distinguished two zones of rock metamorphosis: catamorphism, referring to superficial changes (belts of weathering and cementation) and anamorphism, referring to deep transformations.
