Van Tyne, Claude Halstead, 1869–1930, American historian, b. Tecumseh, Mich. An assistant professor at the Univ. of Michigan (1903–6) and a professor there from 1906 to his death, he became head of the department of history in 1911. Among his books are The Loyalists in the American Revolution (1902); The American Revolution, 1776–1783 ("American Nation" series, 1905); The Causes of the War of Independence (1922); India in Ferment (1923); England and America, Rivals in the American Revolution (1927); and The War of Independence: American Phase (1929), for which he was posthumously awarded the 1930 Pulitzer Prize in history.
