Vanbrugh
Sir John. 1664--1726, English dramatist and baroque architect. His best-known plays are the Restoration comedies The Relapse (1697) and The Provok'd Wife (1697). As an architect, he is noted esp for Blenheim Palace

Vanbrugh and Congreve copied nature; but they who copy them draw as unlike the present age as Hogarth would do if he was to paint a rout or a drum in the dresses of Titian and of Vandyke.
To the next generation and the end of the period (or rather of the Restoration literature, which actually lasted somewhat beyond 1700), belong William Congreve, a master of sparkling wit, Sir John Vanbrugh, and George Farquhar.
