Vandegrift, Alexander (Archer) (1887–1973) marine officer; born in Charlottesville, Va. He commanded the First Marine Division at Guadalcanal in August 1942 in America's first large-scale offensive against Japan, and won the Medal of Honor for directing a brilliant defense against repeated enemy counterattacks.
