Biringuccio, Vannoccio 

Born 1480; died 1539. Italian engineer and scientist.

Biringuccio studied mining and metallurgy in Italy, Bohemia, and Austria for many years. His work On Pyrotechnics, devoted to mining, metallurgy, pottery, and other technological problems, was published in Venice in 1540. It was the technical encyclopedia of its time.

Yet alchemical secrecy was vigorously criticized as early as the sixteenth century by metallurgists such as Vannoccio Biringuccio and the humanist metallurgical author Georg Agricola.
Vannoccio Biringuccio, the 16th century "father of the foundry industry," recommended using the dregs of beer vats and human urine as binders for molding sand, both of which were in use well into the 1900s.
The Sienese Vannoccio Biringuccio (1480-1539), who succeeded Baldassare Peruzzi as architect of the Duomo of Siena, served Italy's most powerful princes as a military engineer and arms caster.
