Vanua Levu (vän `ä lā`v ) or Sandalwood Island, volcanic island, 2,137 sq mi (5,535 sq km), S Pacific, second largest of the Fiji Fiji (fē`jē) or Viti..... Click the link for more information. Islands. Nasoro Levu, or Mt. Thurston (3,139 ft/960 m), is the highest peak. The Dreketi is the principal river. The large east peninsula is connected with the rest of the island by a narrow isthmus. There are gold mines and sugarcane plantations on Vanua Levu. Vanua LevuIsland (pop., including adjacent islands, 1996: 139,516), Fiji. Fiji's second largest island, it is 2,137 sq mi (5,535 sq km) in area. Sighted by the Dutch navigator Abel Janszoon Tasman in 1643, the volcanic Vanua Levu (meaning “Great Land”) has a central mountain range, culminating at Mount Nasorolevu (3,386 ft [1,032 m]), which divides the island into wet and dry sections. The chief river is the Ndreketi. |

Viti Levu, at 4,010 square miles, is the largest and most populated of the islands (which include Vanua Levu and the Yasawas). The owner of the Jean-Michel Cousteau resort on the island of Vanua Levu has also begun complaining about the state of the road into his upscale retreat, claiming it's in such bad shape visitors may not want to return to Fiji (if rioting and armed hostage taking doesn't drive them away first). There are 13 unions in Viti Levu, five in Vanua Levu, with the remaining 18 on outer islands. |
