Vargas Zapata y Luján Ponce de León, Diego de (dyā`gō dā vär`gäs thäpä`tä ē lhän` pōn` thā dā lāōn`), c.1643–1704, Spanish governor and captain general of New Mexico New Mexico, state in the SW United States. At its northwestern corner are the so-called Four Corners, where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah meet at right angles; New Mexico is also bordered by Oklahoma (NE), Texas (E, S), and Mexico (S).

, b. Spain. As governor (1691–97) he reconquered (1692) and resettled New Mexico for the Spanish after the Pueblo revolt in 1680 had driven the Spanish settlers from the region. In 1696 he suppressed another Pueblo revolt. He was reappointed governor in 1703 and conducted a campaign against the Apaches in 1704.
