(computer science)
A record variable whose format is made to depend on some circumstance; for example, a record dealing with rates of pay might contain information on hourly rates for some employees and weekly or monthly salaries for others.

The subjecting of variant records to different styles of analysis and different canons of scholarly judgment would stimulate discussion over what methods are most effective for the interrogation of early modern textual traditions, first at the level of the individual work, and then (one would hope) at the much more complex and challenging level of the miscellany composed of many works.
A variant record can be used to implement the generalisation hierarchy.
