Varietal Renovation
the periodic replacement of the seeds of a cultivated variety whose commercial and biological characteristics have deteriorated as the result of accumulated negative mutations, weed infestation, reduced resistance to diseases and pests, and other unfavorable environmental factors. The seeds are replaced with elite and first-reproduction seeds. Varietal renovation is usually done every four or five years or when necessary. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
