Varnhagen von Ense, Karl August (kärl ou`g
st färn`hägən fən ĕn`zə), 1785–1858, German poet, historian, and journalist. He collaborated with Chamisso and other writers and wrote Biographische Denkmaler [biographical monuments] (5 vol., 1824–30). The Berlin salon of his wife, Rahel Antoine Friederike Levin Varnhagen von Ense (1771–1833), was frequented by leading romantics, among them Heine, Gutzkow, and Laube.Want to thank TFD for its existence?
