Varona, Enrique José
Born Apr. 13, 1849, in Camaguey; died Nov. 19, 1933, in Havana. Cuban public figure, a writer and scholar. Varona participated in the War of Independence (1895-98). From 1913 to 1917 he was vice-president of the Cuban Republic. His historical-literary, and sociological works, despite their concessions to positivism, are written from a fundamentally materialist position. His collection of verses Anacreontic Odes (1868) consists of translations of ancient Greek poets. In the collections Verses (1878), Cuban Landscapes (1879), and Verses in Prose (1921) Varona portrayed Cuban natural features and everyday life. WORKSObras, vols. 1-4.
