Vashchenko-Zakharchenko, Mikhail Egorovich
Born Oct. 31 (Nov. 12), 1825, in the village of Malievtsy, in the Poltava Region; died Aug. 14 (27), 1912, in Kiev. Ukrainian mathematician. Professor at the University of Kiev (from 1867). Vashchenko-Zakharchenko’s doctoral dissertation The Riemann Theory of the Functions of a Complex Variable (1866) was one of the first Russian works on this problem. His History of Mathematics (vol. 1, 1883), which is devoted to antiquity and the Middle Ages, and his translation of Euclid’s Elements, with an explanatory introduction and comments (1880), are of interest even today.
