Vasilkovskii, Sergei

    0.01 sec.
Vasil’kovskii, Sergei Ivanovich

Born Oct. 7 (19), 1854, in the city of Izium, in modern Kharkov Oblast; died Sept. 24 (Oct. 7), 1917, in Kharkov. Ukrainian painter.

Vasil’kovskii studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1876-85) with M. K. Klodt and V. D. Orlovskii. He painted lyric and epic landscapes that brought out the characteristics of Ukrainian nature, as well as genre paintings and works on themes from Ukrainian history (Morning: The Herd on the Steppe, 1884, the Museum of Ukrainian Fine Arts of the Ukrainian SSR, Kiev; The Cossack and the Girl, 1894, Kharkov Museum of Art; Cossack Campaign, 1917, private collection, Kiev). Vasil’kovskii also painted three monumental panels for the building of the Poltava zemstvo (provincial assembly). These panels (Chumatskii Romodanov Road and others, painted between 1902 and 1908) were destroyed during the Great Patriotic War. Vasil’kovskii also did the albums From the Ukrainian Past (1900) and Ukrainian Ornamental Motifs (1912; both in cooperation with N. S. Samokish).
