Veii (vē`ī), ancient city of Etruria, 11 mi (18 km) NW of Rome, Italy. One of the most powerful member cities of the Etruscan League, it was constantly at war with Rome. It fell (c.396 B.C.) to the Roman army under Camillus after a 10-year siege. The city was an important center of Etruscan civilization Etruscan civilization, highest civilization in Italy before the rise of Rome. The core of the territory of the Etruscans, known as Etruria to the Latins, was northwest of the Tiber River, now in modern Tuscany and part of Umbria.

A subsequent series of wars ended in its destruction by Rome in 396 BC after a 10-year siege. Under Augustus it was made a municipium, and up to the 3rd century AD it continued as a religious centre. Excavations begun in the 19th century discovered an acropolis with remnants of fortress walls and houses, a temple from the sixth century B.C., a large pool, marvelous Etruscan sculptures of Apollo and Hermes, many tombs (the most interesting of which, Tomba Campana, has ancient Etruscan frescoes), and many other objects.
