Veinberg, Petr Isaevich
Born June 16 (28), 1831, in Nikolaev; died July 3 (16), 1908, in St. Petersburg. Russian poet and translator. Honorary academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1905). Veinberg’s work first appeared in print in 1851. He published humorous verses and topical satire in the magazine lskra (under such pen names as “Heine from Tambov”). He is known as the translator of H. Heine, J. W. Goethe, V. Hugo, A. Barbier, and Shakespeare. His poem “He Was a Titular Counselor” was set to music by A. S. Dargomyzhskii.
