Vekshinskii, Sergei Arkad’evich
Born Oct. 15(27), 1896, in Pskov. Soviet scientist, specialist in the field of electron-tube technology, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953; corresponding member in 1946); Hero of Socialist Labor (1956). Member of the CPSU since 1940. Vekshinskii worked as the chief engineer of an electrontube factory in Leningrad from 1922 to 1928. Between 1928 and 1936 he managed the vacuum laboratory, from 1936 to 1939 he was the chief engineer, and between 1939 and 1941 he was a consultant at the Svetlana Plant in Leningrad. In 1947 he became director of its scientific research institute. Between 1941 and 1944 he developed a new method of obtaining and analyzing alloys (State Prize of the USSR, 1946). He created a number of electronic instruments. Vekshinskii was awarded three Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and medals.
