Velenje

 

a city in Yugoslavia; in Slovenia, situated in the foothills of the Alps. Population, 7,500 (1967). It was the first socialist mining city in the country (under construction since 1948). There are lignite deposits in the region (an estimated 3.5 million tons were extracted in 1965). They provide the fuel for the Šoštanj steam power plant, which has an output of 135,000 kilowatts.
