Vélez De Guevara, Luis
Born Aug. 26, 1578, in Ecija; died Nov. 10, 1645, in Madrid. Spanish writer. A follower of Lope F. de Vega Carpió, Vêlez de Guevara wrote about 400 dramas. Of these, about 80 have been preserved, including plays on historical themes (King Before Kin, Tamerlane, and others) and on biblical themes. In the play The Peasant Girl From Vera, he condemns the violence of the feudal lords against the people. His picaresque novel The Lame Devil (1641; Russian translation, 1964), satirically portraying Spanish life, influenced A. R. Lesage.
