Velta Line

Line, Velta Martynovna 

(Velta Līne). Born Aug. 28, 1923, in Riga. Soviet Latvian actress. People’s Artist of the USSR (1973). Member of the CPSU since 1953.

Line graduated from the studio of the Drama Theater of the Latvian SSR in 1946, having already joined the company of that theater in 1945. Her roles have included Liena in Upīts’ The Green Earth, Kaiva in Grigulis’ Clay and Ceramics, Larisa in A. N. Ostrovskii’s The Girl Without a Dowry, Desdemona and Ophelia in Shakespeare’s Othello and Hamlet, Zenta in Lācis’ The Fisherman’s Son, Marguerite in Dumas’s The Lady of the Camelias, Anna in a dramatization of L. N. Tolstoy’s novel Anna Karenina, and the title role in Arbuzov’s Tania. She has also appeared in motion pictures.

Line became a candidate member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Latvia in 1975. She was a deputy to the ninth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and the third and fourth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR. Line received the State Prize of the USSR in 1948 and 1951 and has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor.
