In northwestern PA, southeast of Erie; organized Mar 12, 1800 from Allegheny and Lycoming counties. Name Origin: For the Venango River (now called French Creek), which flows through it; from an Indian term of uncertain origin, possibly from innungah 'a figure carved on a tree.'

Area (sq mi): 683.02 (land 675.04; water 7.98). Pop per sq mi: 82.90.
Pop 2005: 55,928. State rank: 43. Pop change: 2000-20005 -2.80%; 1990-2000 -3.10%. Pop 2000: 57,565 (White 97.30%; Black or African American 1.10%; Hispanic or Latino 0.50%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.10%). Foreign born: 0.60%. Median age: 40.20.
Income 2000: per capita $16,252; median household $32,257; Pop below poverty level: 13.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,317-$24,548.
Unemployment 2004: 6.30%. Change from 2000: 0.90%. Median travel time to work: 21.20 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 22.90%.
