Vendémiaire Revolt

    0.01 sec.
Vendémiaire Revolt

an armed action by the royalists in Paris from Oct. 3 to Oct. 5(11-13 Vendémiaire), 1795. The royalists, stirred up after the counterrevolutionary Thermidorian Reaction (July 1794), strove to restore the monarchy in France. The pretext for the Vendémiaire revolt was the adoption by the Thermidor Convention on Aug. 22, 1795, of the French Constitution of the Year III, which deprived the monarchists of the possibility of obtaining predominance in legislative bodies. Gathering in Paris, a large number of covert monarchists, the royalists, surrounded the convention building on Oct. 3, 1795, posing a serious threat to the Thermidor government. P. Barras, appointed commander of the government forces, transferred the handling of military operations to General Napoleone Buonaparte who, bringing up cannon, liquidated the royalist revolt on Oct. 5, 1795.
