Verzhbilovich, Aleksandr Valerianovich

Born Dec. 27, 1849 (Jan. 8, 1850), in St. Petersburg; died there Mar. 2 (15), 1911. Russian cellist.

In 1871, Verzhbilovich graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied under K. Iu. Davydov. From 1877 to 1885 he was a soloist in orchestras of St. Petersburg opera theaters. He was a member of many chamber ensembles, and in 1880 he joined the quartet of the St. Petersburg division of the Russian Musical Society. He gave concerts in many Russian cities and abroad (Paris, Vienna, and Constantinople). From 1882 (with a brief interruption) he taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he became a professor in 1890. Among Verzhbilovich’s students were D. S. Bzul’, E. V. Vol’f-Izrael and S. M. Kozolupov.
