Veshniakov, Vladimir Ivanovich 

Born Nov. 16, 1830, in St. Petersburg; died there Feb. 6, 1906. Russian economist and statistician.

Veshniakov served in the Ministry of State Properties from 1852 to 1896. He was secretary of the division of statistics of the Russian Geographical Society and vice-president of the Free Economic Society. He laid down the basis for collecting up-to-date agricultural statistics on a statewide scale. He directed the development of a program for carrying out indus-trial censuses (1872). He is also noteworthy as the author of works on questions of economic statistics and the statistics of trade.
