Dhoti
an article of male clothing widely worn in India; a loincloth. The dhoti is a straight piece of fabric from two to five meters long (usually white or of one color, sometimes with an ornamental border). It is draped about the legs and hips, with one end passed between the legs, creating a semblance of trousers. In southern India and Punjab this cloth is worn as a wraparound skirt. Members of the highest castes usually wear long dhotis, while the lower castes wear short ones, more convenient for work. In modern India, especially in the cities, the dhoti is often replaced by trousers or shorts of European cut. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
